Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility, elastic constant, magnetization and specific heat measurements were performed on single crystal TmTe. All of these properties are explained by considering the quadrupolar effect due to the crystal field split Γ 8 state. We also observed a phase transition at 1.7 K in specific heat and elastic constant measurements, which is expected to be quadrupolar ordering of the Γ 8 ground state.
