Abstract

The following new solid solution series possessing the structure of the superconducting oxide with an ideal formula Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8 have been characterized: Bi 2− x M x Sr 3− x Y x Cu 2O 8 ( M = Pb, Cd), Bi 2− x Pb x Sr 2Ca 1− x Y x Cu 2O 8, and Bi 2Sr 3−2 x Na x Y x Cu 2O 8. While the phase exists over a wide composition range in each series, superconductivity arises only over a limited range. The results are interpreted on the basis of a correlation between electronegativity and charge carrier concentration in the superconducting copper oxides.
