Abstract
In planar nematic liquid crystals cells twist deformation was generated through photoalignment. By increasing the twist angle gradually, supertwisted cells were constructed in the range of 2π–3π twist angle. The supertwist relaxed through the formation of either π or 2π inversion loops, depending on the character of the photosensitive substrate. The difference in the relaxation process can be related to the zenithal anchoring strength on the photosensitive plate.
