Abstract

ABSTRACT Summer diet composition and overlap in diet among spotfin shiners (Notropis spilopterus), mimic shiners (N. volucellus), and subyearling fallfish (Semotilus corporalis) from three sites in the Susquehanna River basin were examined. All three species fed heavily on aerial aquatic and terrestrial insects. Hymenopterans, adult chironomids, and emerging hydropsychids were the major prey. Subyearling spotfin shiners (10–17 mm, TL) fed almost exclusively on adult chironomids. Subyearling fallfish had the most diverse diets and utilized benthic prey more extensively than the other species. Summer diet overlap was high between spotfin shiners and mimic shiners (Cλ=0.718) and between spotfin shiner and fallfish (0.684). Diet overlap was moderate between mimic shiners and fallfish (0.495). Dietary analysis indicated that the three species fed variously on drifting prey and had similar diets.
