Abstract

The effects of preadsorbed sulfur on the adsorptions of hydrogen and carbon monoxide on Ni/Al 2O 3 were investigated. The results reveal that chemisorption of hydrogen at 298 K is decreased in proportion to the fraction of the nickel surface covered with sulfur. The measured uptake of carbon monoxide at 190 – 298 K, however, is increased in proportion to the sulfur present on the nickel surface due to the formation of nickel carbonyl. The implications for measurement of nickel surface area and for poisoning in CO/H 2 synthesis are discussed.
