Abstract

Cubes of callus from Parthenocissus tricuspidata var. veitchi, when grown on a synthetic liquid medium with continuous shaking, became spherical. The quantity of xylem in the respective spheres was related to the sucrose concentration of the media. Arcs of xylary elements were present at the 2.5% level, and the areas of these arcs were greater in higher concentrations of sucrose. Each arc was bordered by an internal cambium. Phases in xylem differentiation were clearly discernible. Blocking out of the pattern, the first phase in xylem differentiation, was centrifugal; and cytodifferentiation, the final phase, was centripetal.
