Abstract
An ovarian abscess is a rare gynecological finding. It is a primary infection of the ovary without tubal involvement. We report a case of bilateral ovarian abscesses that had developed in long-standing ovarian cysts. Mrs V, a 26-year-old nulliparous woman, presented with a history of continuous pain in the lower abdomen for 1 year and of a fever for 2 months. Her menstrual cycles were regular, with average flow, but associated with dysmenorrhea. At the onset of pain 1 year previously, pelvic ultrasound showed cystic masses of 7=6 cm, with thin septae and low-level internal echoes in both adnexa. A repeat scan 4 months later showed the same findings and the pain had persisted. The patient was empirically given a course of antitubercular drugs based on positive ELISA for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. There was no relief in pain or decrease in cyst size.
