Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to indicate successful and unsuccessful aspects of football diplomacy. There will be presented two cases: match between US and Iran representations during the World Cup 1998 in France and FIFA president’s Palestinian-Israeli diplomatic mission in 2015. Both of those cases will be analysed in terms of meaning for international relations actors – what was their context and effects. Titular success and failuresare related to those cases, which are ambiguous in the assessment. Also non-political actors’ roles will be underlined, because of their actions which transcended beyond the sport’s sphere. Author will make an evaluation of all these elements with a commentary if the football diplomacy could have other effects in those cases. This subject was presented during the international conference Football: Politics of the Global Game, which was held at the University of Warsaw on November 2018.
