Abstract

A full vehicle crash test is the traditional approach to estimate the front side rail performance. Although it seems to be the most accurate method, it has a high development cost. Therefore, a simplified test using a front sub-structure test vehicle and a sub-structure finite element model were developed. It is shown that the sub-structure vehicle crash test can be a useful tool in the early design stage of the development of the front side rail, saving development time and cost.
