Abstract

High-performing antennas are becoming increasingly important with the advancement of new wireless networking technologies. The substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed (CB) antenna which is a high gain antenna has been widely researched by many physicists. The traditional antenna protected by a cavity is rather voluminous. It is also bulky and costly since it is fully metallic and physically made. SIW-based cavity-backed antennas exhibit unidirectional radiation pattern and reduced return loss. Here a novel Half-mode and a Full-mode SIW-CB antenna are presented in this paper. The substrate integrated waveguide cavity is constructed on a substrate with metal layers on the top and the bottom surfaces and metalized via array through the substrate. The SIW cavity is fed by a SIW transmission line. The suggested antennas of the Half Mode resonate with a maximum return loss of − 23.6 db in 9.2 and 11.7 GHz, while full mode antennas with a maximum return loss of − 16.6 db in 5.2, 6.4, 8, 9.8, 11.8 and 14 GHz by forming the Hexaband.
