Abstract

The compounds Bi 2Sr 2RECu 2O 8 + δ with RE  Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Y, Ho, Er and Tm isotypical with Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8 + δ are reported. The lattice constants gradually change with the size of the RE ion. In the series Bi 2Sr 2RECu 2O 8 + δ the orthorhombic distortion increases with decreasing rare earth ionic radius. It is not possible to prepare the analogous compounds with lanthanum, ytterbium and lutetium; however, the smaller cations of lutetium can be incorporated in the presence of a larger cation giving a tolerated mean ionic radius, e.g. Bi 2Sr 2Gd 0.5Lu 0.5Cu 2O 8 + δ . The compounds all show semiconducting properties. Mössbauer spectroscopy on Bi 2Sr 2EuCu 2O 8 + δ indicates that the europium is incorporated at one site in the crystal lattice.
