Substance catholique et principe protestant d'après Paul Tillich

Abstract

Jean-Pierre Beland : Catholic substance and Protestant principle according to Paul Tillich. This article puts forward the theologian Paul Tillich's formula «Catholic substance and Protestant principle» as a possible means of transcending the conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism, terms which express an alienation from true Christianity. The formula seeks to bring out the fundamental structure and essence of the Church of Christ, as it should be whether Catholic or Protestant. An analysis of the two poles, «Catholic substance» and «Protestant principle», shows how they call for and complete each other.
