Abstract
An analysis of the motion of a subsonic plasma in a continuous CO2 laser beam indicates that the radial thermal expansion of the plasma is the rate-controlling effect. Plasma extinction was found to occur at an ionization degree of approximately 10%, which corresponds to a flux of less than 104 W cm−2; this is two orders of magnitude below values previously reported.
