We selected twenty articles from four different journals: the International Journal of Nursing Studies, the American Journal of Public Health, the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. We chose these journals because they are representative of the way in which community-based health work is being discussed across sub-fields in public health. Articles were identified using the following search command: ‘community or community-based or collaboration or empowerment’. These words were chosen because they reflect the research question (see above). Of the positive hits for the search command in each journal, we selected the first relevant article from each of the following time brackets: 1995–7, 1998–2000, 2001–3, 2004–5.
