Abstract
SUMMARY Traditional collection development policy statements are broad documents intended for entire libraries or based upon certain formats or certain audience characteristics. Subject-specific policy statements are an alternative form that can be used to more clearly delineate the scope and goals of particular collections. A more detailed subject-based policy better communicates the unique characteristics of a particular collection; better assists librarians who use the collection; and aids patrons who are using collections for particular research needs. Development of the subject-based policy provides an opportunity to closely analyze the present state of collections, to examine the interests and needs of clientele, and to strategically plan the future of the collection.
