Abstract

SummaryIn 85 old age patients with subacute, classical and definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA) complying with the American Rheumatism Association's positive diagnostic criteria the following was observed concerning the exclusions:No data supported the diagnosis rheumatic fever or acute infectious arthritis. 2 patients (2 %) possibly had Reiter's syndrome. In 2 patients with paraproteinemia multiple myeloma was probable in 1 (1 %). 1 patient (1 %) died from lymphoma. 11 patients (13 %) probably had gout, possibly iatrogenic in 4. Another 7 patients (8 %) showed hyperuricemia, perhaps iatrogenic in 2. Finally, 2 patients (2 %) had psoriasis.The 15 patients (18 %) with diseases listed under the exclusions were classified separately. The other 9 patients (10 %) were listed separately. A total of 24 patients (28 %) were placed in separate groups for pertinent information.
