Abstract
The diffractive contribution to the production of various helicity states in an inelastic interaction is calculated. The formalism is applied to the production of $N(1688)$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1815)$, and $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(1915)$ in nucleon-nucleon scattering, and an estimate is made of the diffractive portion of the helicity-flip amplitudes for these resonances. A nonsinglet Pomeron leads to finite asymptotic differences in the cross sections.
