Abstract

In this paper, the method of supressing the carrier for optical millimetre wave signal using inverted optical filter is investigated. Therefore, the quality of obtained 60 GHz millimetre wave (mm-wave) signal based on carrier supersession using inverted optical filter is demonstrated. Specifically, a simple and cost effect design is used to generate it by just using a single dual drive Mache-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM) and an inverted optical filter. This work has two simulation schemes; the first pertains is generating mm-wave signal based on carrier suppression, where in the first, the Optical spurious suppression ratio of 30.56 dB is achieved. In the second simulation scheme the performance of downlink data transmission of 2.5 Gpbs with obtained mm-wav over a single mode fibre transmission line is analysed. Whereby, two scenarios are considered to modulate the data with obtained optical mm-wave in the obtainable design. First scenario is modulating the data directly with DD-MZM while generating the optical mm-wave, second scenario when the data is modulated with obtained optical mm-wave signal. In this study, measuring the max Q factor for different bit rates are considered to observe the performance of the obtained mm-wave signal over the single mode fibre. With the proposed design for 2.5 Gbps, the max Q factors of 21 over 20 km fibre length are achieved. In addition for that Max Q factor of obtained signal is measured with different bit rates at 2 km, where for 10 Gbps, max Q Factor of 8 can be achieved. This design approved that the mm-wave signal can be generated effectively using inverted optical filter.
