Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a potential joining technology for the welding of dissimilar materials of Al alloy and polymer. But it is still very difficult due to the great difference in physical and chemical properties between the two kinds of materials. In this paper, thermal-assisted friction stir lap welding (FSLW) for 6061-T6 Al alloy and thermoplastic polycarbonate (PC) is studied. Experiments of FSLW with and without thermal assist are carried out in contrast. The tensile strength tests and microstructure analysis are made to explore the effect of thermal-assisted FSLW. Results indicated that the thermal-assisted FSLW at the same parameters optimizes the surface appearance. The maximum tensile strength with thermal assist reaches 34 MPa, which is increased by 42% as compared to none thermal assist. The microstructure analysis indicates that thermal-assisted FSLW promotes the fluidity of the two kinds of material in the welding region, which makes stirring more sufficient.
