Abstract

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is attractive for building heating and cooling due to its high energy performance and reliable operation capability. A GSHP system can be composed of a large number of individual borehole heat exchangers (BHEs). The efficiency of GSHP system depends on the correct design of the associated BHEs. Single and double U-tube heat exchangers are two most common BHE categories in China, and sometimes engineers have difficulties choosing them. This paper is based on a case study of an office building with about 10000 m2 floor area, which uses GSHP system for heating and cooling. Different scenarios with various parameters, such as spacing between boreholes, borehole diameter and configuration, thermal conductivity of soil, are given for simulation. And in each scenario, the comparisons of the system efficiency with regard to the energy supply and investment for single and double U-tube heat exchangers are presented.
