Abstract

In this paper, we implemented a vibration or displacement system using the well-known self-mixing effect in an Er 3+–Yb 3+ codoped Distributed Bragg reflector (EYDBR) fiber laser. The experimental Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) was measured up to be 60.25 dB at 2 km. This paper also focuses on the theoretical description of the self-mixing effect which applies to our specific implementation, followed by some experimental results. From the experiment results, the compact structure and high SNR up to 60.25 dB of self-mixing effect sensor can be earned by combining the self-mixing interference technique and EYDBR fiber laser. It is also proved potential using self-mixing interference with ASE source in EYDBR fiber laser for high sensitivity and wide range measurement.
