Abstract
In this paper, we propose an optimized coding system for progressive image transmission. This system includes a robust image compression algorithm based on the improved set partitioning in hierarchical trees (I-SPIHT) coder. The main idea of ISPIHT is to divide wavelet coefficients into two parts and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) was applied on the important part while set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) was applied on the rest of coefficients. Moreover, an unequal error protection (UEP) method applies more powerful error detection and correction to the important code stream with higher priority level. Simulations on binary symmetric channels show that the proposed scheme led to 0.4 dB increase in the PSNR values and a considerable improvement in the subjective fidelity as compared to the corresponding figures obtained from the equal error protection (EEP) scheme. This technique is more useful when the channel condition is inferior.
