Abstract

The paper aims to explore the social responsibility behavioral motivations of private enterprises in Chinese market environment. Based on survey of 220 private enterprises in eastern China, it shows that enterprise token on social responsibility is to meet the needs of their subsistence, development, social power, and personal values of entrepreneurs. The needs then will produce corresponding motivations and behaviors. It reveals that there are five different behavioral motivations to bear social responsibilities for different private enterprises, including promotion of entrepreneurs’ social status, concerning social values, seeking government support, gathering talented people, and avoiding development risk. Then some suggestions are given to stimulate the internal motivations of private enterprises and promote the cooperation of stakeholders for better social responsibility performance.
