Abstract

We report the study of the optical and Langmuir film properties of a series of soluble poly( p-phenylenevinylene), both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted with various alkoxy chain lengths. The nomenclature used to label the polymers studied is PPV R/ R′, where R and R′ refer to the length of the two alkoxy chains on the substituted ring. We also report similar studies on a PPV polymer with a flexible spacer in the main backbone. The nomenclature used is PPV R/ R- x, where R still refers to the length of the alkoxy chain substituted symmetrically on the ring, and x the number of carbon atoms in the flexible spacer.
