Abstract

The purpose of this research is the study of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) composed of (1-propanol or 2-propanol + choline bitartrate + water) at T = (298.15, 308.15 and 318.15) K and atmospheric pressure (≈85 kPa). The use of these systems for separation of acetaminophen, as a model drug was also examined. Partitioning of acetaminophen was also studied in aqueous two-phase systems containing choline chloride and 1-propanol or 2-propanol. Better extraction of acetaminophen is observed in the ATPS containing choline bitartrate than choline chloride. First, the binodal data and tie-lines were determined for these systems at the above mentioned temperatures. Then the effects of the tie-line length and temperature on the drug separation were investigated. In addition, the Merchuk equation was used to reproduce binodal results. The non-random two-liquid (e-NRTL) model, the Othmer - Tobias and Setschenow equations were used to fit the tie-line values of these systems. Finally, we examined the recovery of alcohol from water mixtures; and it was found that 1-propanol and 2-propanol can be extracted with maximum selectivity of 88% and 86% respectively in a single-step extraction procedure using these ATPSs.
