Abstract

X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy has been used to study the interaction of poly-2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide with Cr vapours. Binding of Cr into complexes of the bisarene type with phenylene groups and degradation of the polymer chain via the oxygen atoms with the formation of Cr phenylates and oxides were found. The appearance of Cr in the surface layers was accompanied by increase in surface conductivity of the polymer expressed in the disappearance of the recharging of the surface with a phot-emission of electrons.
