Abstract

We study the gauge group SU(2) L×(T 3) R×U V(1) for the unification of the weak and electromagnetic interactions. This group, which contains the standard SU(2)×U(1) Weinberg-Salam (WS) model as a subgroup, can emerge as a low-energy subgroup in some models of grand unification. Depending on the symmetry breaking pattern we set limits on the mass of the heavier Z boson. One symmetry breaking pattern allows parity violations in atoms to be much smaller than in the WS model while preserving the agreement with data in all other processes. This pattern permits the heavier Z boson to be as light as 1.78 M W/cos θ W. An alternate pattern only affects neutrino results, and here the lower limit on the heavy Z boson mass is 2.74 M W/cos θ W.
