Abstract

For voltage stability problems caused by grid-connected wind farms, a strategy of coordinated reactive power compensation is proposed in this paper. The strategy utilizes static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) to stabilize the voltage of low voltage bus of wind farm. As the basic reactive power compensation unit, STATCOM works at constant voltage regulation mode and is always put into operation. When the reactive power output of STATCOM reaches its maximum value while the voltage of low voltage bus can not be stabilized still, the reactive power compensation of DFIGs which used as compensators will start together. The illustrative example shows that the proposed strategy can effectively restrain the fluctuation of bus voltage caused by wind speed and has a certain voltage support capability when system voltage drops.
