Abstract

The application of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) in a wind farm is getting common due of its inherent advantages like operation at variable speed and autonomous controllability of active and reactive power when compared to the conventional generators. Voltage stability problems arise in DFIG along with the disturbances in the grid side when such a wind farm is integrated with a grid. While following the grid codes, it becomes a concern for power system engineers to integrate the DFIG based wind farms to the grid. The paper investigates the connection of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for compensation of reactive power to maintain the voltage profile stable and protecting DFIG-based wind farm interconnected to power grid from disconnection prior to or after the disturbances. A system is designed for this purpose and it is simulated in MATLAB (Simulink). The results thus obtained, proves the theoretical analysis of STATCOM that mitigates the transient disturbances effect leading to the improvement in the wind farm’s stability and performance.
