Abstract

Alcoholic liver disease is considered to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, with increasing incidence day by day especially in developing countries like India. Alcohol intake remains the major cause of cirrhosis. This study is done to evaluate the serum magnesium, serum zinc and serum copper in alcoholic liver disease. This study shows a significant decrease in serum magnesium, serum zinc and increase in serum copper in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Nutritional abnormalities occur in alcoholic liver disease which might participate in progression of the disease. Malnutrition and malsupplementation of certain micronutrients can be observed in alcohol abusers. Malsupplementation or an excessive intake of special micronutrients may contribute to the development of hepatic damage in alcoholic liver disease. Routine biochemical assessment of trace elements in patients with alcoholic liver disease is an important step in the management protocol and to reduce the progression of disease.
