Abstract

The main goal of this study is to quantify the neutron flux redistribution in detectors and the shadowing effect between control rods by proposing an instrumental calibration factor for measurement, based on computer simulations. The MCNP code was used to simulate the rod drop experiment in the IPEN/MB-01 research reactor. A study of the reactivity behavior was carried out during the most transient period of the rod drop experiment (t < 10 s), demonstrating great agreement between the simulation and the experiment carried out using the source jerk method. A methodology was developed to estimate the shadowing effect and the flux redistribution, and to propose a correction of the results obtained (calibration) in the simulations using the MCNP code and the rod drop experiment respectively. The maximum deviations between the reference value obtained from measuring the control banks via the stable period method and the simulated values were 0.5 % and 11.3 %, respectively.
