Abstract

GPC was used to study MWD of epoxy resins based on bisphenol A and epichlorhydrin. Using a Waters chromatograph and styrogel columns with a porosity of 200, 500 and 1000 Å satisfactory separation was achieved in the region of low molecular weights. MWD parameters of a number of Soviet epoxy resins were determine and compared with MWD parameters of foreign samples. It was shown that retention volumes of epoxy resin molecules depend to a large extent on the type of end group, which enables GPC to be recommended for determining distribution according to types of functionality of oligomers containing epoxide. Preparative fractionation was carried out of resins ED-20 and ED-22 and their fractional composition determined. Results of preparative fractionation show satisfactory agreement with data concerning the analytical determination of the molecular composition of low molecular weight epoxy resins.
