Abstract

A simple broadband circularly polarized antenna based on metasurface(MS) structure is proposed. The antenna consists of a slotted floor and MS radiating patch, where the MS is placed above the slotted floor. The MS structure twists the polarization of linearly polarized(LP) wave into circularly polarized(CP) wave. The overall size of the antenna is <tex>$36\text{mm}^{\ast}36\text{mm}^{\ast}4.2\text{mm}$</tex> (<tex>$0.6\lambda_{0}^{\ast}0.6\lambda_{0}^{\ast}0.07\lambda_{0}$</tex> at 5GHz). The impedance bandwidth <tex>$(\vert \mathrm{S}_{11} \vert < -10\text{dB},\ \text{IBW})$</tex> of the antenna is 44.16% (3.90–6.11GHz), and the axial ratio bandwidth <tex>$(\vert \text{AR}\vert < - 3\text{dB}$</tex>, ARBW) is 20.35% (4.81–5.9GHz). In addition, the antenna has a symmetrical radiation pattern and low cross-polarization. Therefore, the antenna can be used in C-band satellite communication systems.
