Abstract

In this letter, to solve the complex issue of the circularly polarized antenna, a new wideband circularly polarized microstrip slot antenna based on metasurface (MS) for C-band satellite communication application is introduced. The proposed antenna is formed by an MS and a source antenna. The MS is used to widen the –10 dB impedance (S 11 ) bandwidth and convert the linearly polarized (LP) signal from a source antenna into a circularly polarized (CP) signal. The MS consists of 4 unit cells arranged in a 2 × 2 layout on a substrate, where each unit cell is cut out of a cross patch and two square patches. When 6 more equal square patches are cut out in the middle of MS, the MS structure works best. The final model, with an overall size of 36 × 36 × 3.5 mm3 (approximately 0.65λ 0 × 0.65λ 0 × 0.06λ 0 at 5.5 GHz), is designed using HFSS15.0 software simulation. As a result, the S11 bandwidth is 41.5% from 4.1 to 6.25GHz. The 3dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) is achieved to 18.3% from 5.2 to 6.25GHz.
