Abstract

Inelastic spin flip scattering of neutrons is presented as a new experimental technique to study hyperfine interactions in solids. A short outline of the theory is given. The advantages and limitations of the method are discussed by comparison with other techniques such as Mossbauer spectroscopy and NMR. A number of nuclei are quoted which are suited for the method. The application of the new method is demonstrated by a number of examples where the hyperfine field in compounds containing hydrogen, cobalt and vanadium was investigated.
