Abstract

Using the Mossbauer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic methods the states of gold and platinum impurity atoms in vitreous and crystalline As2Se3 are studied. It is shown that gold in the form of Au3+ incorporates in the glass structure as part of a quadratic complex, while platinum in the form of Pt4+ as part of a distorted octahedron. The discovery of the maximum valence states of gold and platinum impurity atoms makes it possible to extend the model of saturated chemical bonds to these cases for the explanation of the absence of impurity conductivity in doped vitreous As2Se3.
