Abstract

Methods were developed to examine the physical pattern of burning out of polymers. A study was made by these methods of the dependence of the rate constant of burning out PMMA on parameters of the surrounding atmosphere. It was shown that with an increase in the concentration of the oxidizing agent in flow the rate of burning out increase in accordance with the theory developed for the combustion of liquid fuels. On increasing the concentration of oxygen in the surrounding medium, flame temperature increases and the radius of combustion decreases. It was shown that during the combustion of a PMMA sphere in a flow containing the oxidizing agent, the entire heat is liberated in a fairly narrow zone and the process of heat transfer from the reaction zone to the surface of the polymer is the limiting process for the maintenance of indepedent combustion of PMMA.
