Abstract

The review of works connected with working out of a new method of study of the basic acoustical parameters of transparent crystals is presented. The method is the most effective for the phase transitions investigations and based upon an analysis of the phase and amplitude of heterodyne signal arising at the photomultiplier cathode as a result of superposition of nondiffracted and diffracted light beams in Raman-Nath limit of diffraction. As a result the possibility of local ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements can be realized as well as acoustical nonuniformity of the crystal and its effect upon the phase transition. Detailed study of anomalies of velocity and attenuation in the model TGS crystals grown in different conditions, pure and with impurities, γ-irradiated and in the conditions when the uniform temperature gradient occurs in crystal, is presented. The dependence of pretransitional phenomena on the quality of crystals, the degree of phase transition smearing in the perfect TGS crystal...
