Abstract

In continuing the previous report (This Journal, 58, 16-20 (1950)), the present authors reported the resultsof further studies on the improvement of water proofness of glass fiber by the special surface treatment as following: The special surface treatment of glass fiber is the fluation or the reaction by the dilute solution of water soluble fluo-silicate salts as zinc fluosilicate (ZnSiF6, used in the first report) or magnesium fluo-silicate (MgSiF6, used in the present report). The samples of two kinds of glass fiber (dia.: 7μ or 0.007mm, Na2O content: (a) 18% and (b) 8% were dipped in the solution of several concentration: 1, 2, 3-8%, for several duration of 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, at several temperatures 20°C, 30°C, 40°C, 70°C, 90°C, and tested (1) the water proofness of thus fluation treated glass fiber by examining the alkali solubility, weight decrease, etc., by treating with water at 30°C for 2 hours, and (2) tensile strength. The results were fully compared and discussed with those in the previous first report.
