Abstract
Surface tensions, γ, have been measured over the whole composition range for mixtures of tert-butyl alcohol and water at 26°C. The data were plotted as (γ w - γ a) X i /(γ w - γ i) vs. X 1 where γ w, γ a and γ i denote surface tension of water, alcohol and alcohol—water mixture respectively, and X i is the molar fraction of alcohol in the bulk water phase. The plots consist of a sequence of straight lines. For each concentration range for which the plot is rectilinear, the aggregates of alcohol and water molecules formed at the surface are of the same composition. Attempts have been made to determine the likely stoichiometric composition of the water/alcohol species.
