Abstract

The activities of certain enzymes in scorbutic guinea-pigs was studied. There was a significant decrease in the activity of hepatic succinic dehydrogenase, serum alkaline phosphatase and blood catalase. The activity of adenosine triphosphatase increased markedly in scorbutic conditions. Hydrolysed glucosecycloacetoacetate (GCA) could maintain the activities of all these enzymes at their normal levels. A possible mechanism of the beneficial effect of GCA has been discussed.
