Abstract

The possibility of attenuation of the schizontal stage of Theileria annulata within bovine lymphocytes was investigated using 60Co radiation at 0,5 and 10 kR levels. Irradiated parasites inoculated into susceptible cross-bred calves induced a relatively non-severe disease with low parasitaemia, mortality and morbidity. Recovered calves were resistant to subsequent tick challenge with the same virulent strain. The degree of attenuation or damage of schizonts appeared to be proportional to the radiation dose. Immunoprophylaxis of susceptible cattle with γ-irradiated T. annulata schizonts seems to be potentially practical under laboratory conditions.
