Abstract

Culex vishnui group was the most abundant mosquito in collections by different methods at 3 villages in North Arcot District. The abundance of this and all the other common mosquito species in the area followed the rainfall pattern closely. Mosquito abundance was lowest in the dry hot months from March to May, rose with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June-July, and was highest during and after the northeast monsoon, from October-January. Culex vishnui group was most abundant in 1960, a year in which there was unusually heavy early rainfall followed by heavy rain later in the year.
