Abstract

Many studies have been carried out on the identification and role of inhibitors of calcium oxalate crystallization in urine1-5. The main inhibitors of agglomeration appear to be polyanions such as glycosaminoglycans1,2,4,6, RNA-like material3 and acidic glycoproteins5 including non-polymerised Tamm-Horsfall mucoprotein (THM)7. The main inhibitors of crystal growth are RNA, citrate and an acidic glycoprotein5. The object of this paper is to study the effects of some of these molecules on the surface properties of calcium oxalate crystals in vitro.
