Abstract

The present study deals with mathematical modelling of critical size of the plastic zone at the crack tip and the direction of crack initiation in an edge cracked plate under mixed mode (I/II) loading. Stress intensity factors determined by performing FEA are used to plot the shape of plastic zone and determine its minimum size leading to crack initiation and direction. At this distance from the crack tip, crack tip opening displacement, and energy release rate are determined. It has been observed that the domination of shear stress results in asymmetry in shape of the plastic zone. Decrease in energy release rate results in smaller plastic zone thereby lowering the stress traixiality as well as CTOD. The same response is observed in plane stress as well as plane strain conditions.
