Abstract

COMPOSITION OF AIR IN THE TYMPANIC CAVITY OF PATIENTS WITH STENOSIS OF THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE IF THE Eustachian tube remains closed, the air in the tympanic cavity gets gradually thinner, leading to retraction of the tympanic membrane. Bezold interpreted this phenomenon to be precisely the same as respiration. He thought that the oxygen (O 2 ) content was absorbed from the surface of the tympanic cavity and that carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) was discharged in a minute amount. Koerner considered that the air was absorbed in its entirety. These interpretations, however, were not based on experimental results. The present study is concerned with microanalysis of the air of the tympanic cavity. The experiment was carried out following Krogh's 1 method, with some modifications. The air of the tympanic cavity was aspirated, using a 2-cc. syringe (containing 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridine [Rivanol]) with a long needle, through the tympanic membrane.
