Abstract

The binding of calcium to ten different proteins at pH 7.4 reaches a maximum in each case at a calcium concentration of 10–15 mmoles/1. There is a large variation in the maximum amount bound, being zero for hemoglobin and 30 moles/10 5 g. for pepsin. For proteins with isoelectric points in the range 4–10, no correlation was found between calcium binding and amino acid composition.
