Abstract

Abstract Detailed phenological, culture and cytological studies have been made on Phyllophora truncata (Pallas) Newroth et A. R. A. Taylor (= P. brodiaei (Turn.) Endl.). These studies confirm that this species has an abbreviated life history, with a diploid tetrasporangial phase produced on a haploid monoecious gametophyte plant, probably as a result of fertilization. Meiosis occurs in the tetrasporangia and haploid tetraspores develop into gametophyte-like plants.
