Abstract

The metabolism of propylene glycol distearate (PGDS) labeled with propylene glycol-1-C 14 and carboxyl C 14 stearic acid has been investigated. In vitro hydrolysis of PGDS by steapsin has been demonstrated. The extent of absorption of PG ∗DS, PGDS ∗, PG plus S ∗ are all similar to a C 14 carboxyl-labeled stearic acid mixture of glyceride esters. Continuous CO 2 measurements for 72 hr. have been made for the above compounds and for PG ∗ plus S. Results show that the propylene glycol stearate esters are hydrolized and absorbed in a manner similar to glyceride esters of stearic acid.
