Abstract

An ultrastructural study of a serially transmissible nephroblastoma DNV line showed the presence of virions similar, morphologically, to the avian leukosis group viruses. The particles were generally located in the basement membranes and the capillary endothelium. A chronological study indicated that the viral particles appeared and multiplied very early in the hematopoietic organs. The virions were later observed in the lung, the digestive tract, the ovary, the suprarenal gland and the heart. A very large number of viral particles were found in the kidney distal convoluted tubules 25 days after infection. Only the kidney actually underwent a malignant transformation; furthermore an unusual differentiation into cartilaginous or osteoid cells was sometimes observed and, strikingly enough, these elements were virogenic.
